Railway in Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar has an ancient history with railways which began in December 1880 inauguration of the line from Bhavnagar Terminus to Wadhwan. The railway line was inaugurated by Sir James Fergusson who was the Governor of Bombay in the presence of Sir Takhtasinhji, the ruler of Bhavnagar. Limdi was the destination of the first train which took off from Bhavnagar.At the time of Independence, princely states were integrated in the Indian Union. Bhavnagar was the first princely state to be integrated in India. The property and responsibility of the State Railways was passed on to the then State Government of Saurashtra which was operating as “Saurashtra Railways”. In early 1952, they were taken over by the Government of India and merged with Western Railway. Bhavnagar Division's formal inauguration took place on 15.08.1956.
